Liturgical chant is a vital part of Christian worship, tracing back to Apostolic times. It’s a form of prayer and praise, deeply rooted in the Byzantine Rite.

“It was really beautiful to combine both the Eastern and Western lungs of the Catholic Church into one big event and to see the Latin Rite and Eastern Rite traditions being combined in one service,” McEnery said (*Caitlin McEnery, cantor at St. Mary’s).

The 10th National Eucharistic Congress took place from July 17-21. Kim Kocuba, parishioner of Dormition of the Mother of God in Cleveland, Ohio, was in attendance. Here is what she had to say:

A blazing good time was had by all who attended Vacation Bible School held at Holy Spirit Byzantine Catholic Church on July 15-19. The theme was Fire and Water. In attendance were approximately 14 eager students ranging in ages pre-K to 8th grade, teacher Maria McKay, Deacon Joe and volunteers Karen Hanigosky Conrad and Laurel Bobik.

Deacon Eugene fell asleep in the Lord, Thursday July 25. Funeral Services will be held at 10AM on Thursday, August 1, at St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church, Barberton, OH. Burial to follow at St. Nicholas Cemetery, New Franklin, OH.

I can barely recall being in first grade when I started serving at the altar at my Byzantine Catholic parish. Perhaps I was a bit young, but the “older boys” guided me and were usually quite patient in teaching me the altar serving responsibilities, helping me to mature until I was able to be “head server.” I believe God was already planting the seeds of my priestly vocation at this early age.
