A sizable group of parishioners from Dormition and the Cathedral recently began gathering to study and discuss Bishop Robert’s latest teaching, “Eucharistic Communion and the Parochial Community”. What was originally expected to be two one-hour sessions is quickly growing into at least four or five gatherings, totaling well into the double digits in hours. Such a blessing.
The conversations began with a simple question: What do these words even mean? Terms such as transcendent, mission, salvific grace, citizenship, and worship are central to the teaching. If we do not understand the words, it is difficult to understand the message, much less live and emulate it.
These are “closed” gatherings for the participating parishioners as they engage in a sincere self-evaluation of themselves and their parish community through the lens of Bishop Robert’s teachings. The conversations are open, honest, accountable, and authentic discussions about parish life, spiritual growth, and what it means to be a vibrant parish. Questions such as, “Are we a vibrant parish?” and “How would a complete stranger experience our parish before, during, and after Divine Liturgy?” have led to thoughtful reflection on Christ’s words in John 13:34-35: “Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Would a visitor see us living that command?
If you have not yet taken time to study Bishop Robert’s latest teaching, consider doing so. Speak with your priest, gather a small group, and begin the conversation. Listening, learning, and living the faith is how we continue to grow in Christ.
