On May 14, 2025, as part of the Jubilee of the Eastern Churches, Pope Leo XIV held a special audience for Eastern Catholics, marking a historic moment of unity and celebration within St. Peter’s Basilica.
Under the great dome, the faithful gathered for the Divine Liturgy, led by Patriarch Youssef Absi of Antioch, with a homily delivered by Patriarch Sviatoslav Shevchuk of Kyiv-Halych. The presence of Cardinal Claudio Gugerotti, Prefect of the Dicastery for Eastern Churches, alongside the heads of various sui iuris Churches of the Byzantine tradition—including the Hungarian, Romanian, Slovak, Ruthenian, and Croatian communities—underscored the profound diversity and shared heritage of these traditions.
Echoing through the basilica, prayers and hymns in Greek, Ukrainian, Arabic, Romanian, Armenian, and other languages created a powerful testament to the richness of Eastern Catholic spirituality. Once again, the Holy Father affirmed the dignity of Eastern Catholics, emphasizing that the universal Church deeply needs their traditions and witness.
This gathering held special significance in light of Pope Leo XIV’s recent address to Eastern Catholics, in which he reaffirmed his commitment to supporting their communities. He acknowledged the immense contribution of the Christian East to the Church, emphasizing that “the contribution that the Christian East can offer us today is immense.” His words recognized the ongoing challenges of persecution and displacement, offering comfort and empowerment to those who remain steadfast in their faith despite adversity.
Moreover, the Pope urged Eastern Catholics to safeguard their traditions, cautioning against any dilution of their rich heritage. “It is vital then, that you preserve your traditions without attenuating them,” he declared, reinforcing the importance of maintaining their distinct liturgical and spiritual identity. His message resonated deeply, serving as both an encouragement and a call to action.
More than a celebration, this Jubilee was a powerful affirmation of the Eastern Catholic Church’s essential role in the broader Catholic tradition. As Pope Leo XIV eloquently expressed, these communities hold a “unique and privileged role” within the Church, offering a depth of spirituality and liturgical beauty that enriches the entire Christian world.
