In today’s Gospel (Mt 9:1-8), on the 6th Sunday after Pentecost, we hear of the paralytic lowered before Christ. Seeing the faith of those who brought him, Jesus first says, “Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven” (Mt 9:2). When questioned, He reveals His authority, commanding the man, “Rise, take up your bed and go home” (Mt 9:6). Immediately, the man is healed.
We are reminded that Christ comes not only to heal the body but to restore the soul. As Byzantine Catholics, we understand that sin itself is a kind of paralysis that binds us, weighs us down, and limits our freedom to live fully in God. Yet Christ sees our deeper need and offers mercy first. He invites us to “take heart,” to trust in His compassion, and to rise into a new life.Living the Gospel as Missionary Disciples
