In today’s Gospel (Mt 8:28–9:3), on the 5th Sunday after Pentecost, we witness Christ’s divine authority over both visible and invisible afflictions. He encounters the demoniacs and, with a word, frees them. The power of Christ restores what was broken, even when others are afraid or resistant to his presence. The people of the city, overwhelmed, “begged him to leave their neighborhood” (Mt 8:34), showing how easily fear and attachment to worldly comfort can blind us to God’s mercy.
This event not only demonstrates Jesus' authority over the spiritual realm but also highlights the destructive nature of demonic possession. It serves as a reminder of the power and compassion of Jesus in delivering individuals from the grip of darkness and restoring them to wholeness.
